Responsibility

Excellent article from AlJazeera LINK

"So who bears the responsibility for turning Libya into a war zone and an object of an international military intervention?
Could it be those who confronted a peaceful civil uprising for freedom with lethal force, and when it escalated into a full-fledged revolt, used aerial bombardments, heavy artillery to quell it?"

Sunday 20March Quick Summary

  • Airstrikes on road to Benghazi were very effective with lots of Qadhaffi tanks and APCs destroyed.
  • Benghazi phone lines still down, almost 40 hours. Some say they can get through on Libyana but can't confirm that
  • Tripoli lines still up, lots of static and probably heavily monitored
  • Someone in Benghazi with sat internet skyped that city is tense because they expect remnants of Qadhaffi's Lijan Thawriya forces in city. Apparently lots of roadblocks everywhere.
  • Libya solidarity demo was held today in Geneva, will upload photos and videos soon.

Ongoing attack on Benghazi by Qadhaffi

Best coverage this morning from Benghazi is on Libya Alhurra. Apparently no foreign journalists in the area.

This is the meaning of Qadhaffi's ceasefire.
His plan is to embedd as many pro-Qadhaffi forces in Benghazi to make the protection of civilians difficult.

This reporter deserves a Pulitzer; she is the only one I've seen who has asked the tough questions.
I wonder if zeif is really that much of a liar or if he is living in a fantasy world of denial.

UN Security Council Vote

The vote will take place at 6PM EST.  Please pray with me for a positive outcome.  I assumed girddafi promised Russia and China oil to veto the bill, but after his desperate speech he just gave (by phone), I am starting to think he is really worried and scared.  God willing!

girdaffi Speech

girdaffi currently giving a speech begging Benghazi to drop weapons and support him.  He sounds desperate!  The scene in Benghazi is that of utter defiance.  Here are some points, I am typing as quickly as I can....

- He just used his threat of street street, house house, room room.  He is threatening to attack Benghazi tonight.
- He denies any attacks on Bab-Aziziya
- He says he would rather die than see the people of Benghazi die (here's hoping)
- He claims that fear is over (more true than he knows)
- He is claiming that reports of airplanes being shot down are lies (you tube videos say otherwise)
- I'm loving this, he is actually begging for Benghazi support
- He promises parties and fireworks in Benghazi soon
- How can I hurt Benghazi, they are my sons he claims

He just hung up the phone and the people of Benghazi are out in HUGE numbers defying him and carrying the flag of liberation.

Protestors or Rebels: How the Label Changes Our Perception of Libya

This week, in press accounts of the protests in Libya, "protestors" suddenly became "rebels." Why? And, how does the word “rebel” change the way readers perceive the conflict there? Foreign Policy Managing Editor Blake Hounshell and New York Times Foreign Editor Susan Chira explain when to start labeling a protester a rebel

North Africa's Hip Hop Protest Music

In the midst of the revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt and the protests elsewhere in North Africa and the Middle East, a group of Libyan exiles who run a website called Khalas noticed one surprising common thread in the voicing of discontent … rap music. Across the region rap artists were providing the soundtrack to protests in the streets. So Khalas decided to contribute by releasing a mixtape of their own. Khalas co-founder Abdulla Darrat talks about the influence of hip hop in this latest round of protests.

Inside the Libyan Diaspora's Resistance Movement

Protesters in Libya are calling for the end of Muammar al-Qaddafi's regime - a regime that has kept the country under an information black out for years. That's why some in the Libyan diaspora feel a special responsibility to aid the flow of information in and out of the country. One member of that diaspora is OTM producer Sarah Abdurrahman. Sarah has spent the week, not as a disinterested journalist, but rather, as a part of the movement. She describes how she, along with friends and family, have been trying to bring about change in Libya from laptops in Washington DC.

Is it bad grammar to write a name in lower case?  You may have noticed that I spell gaddafi with a small g. My high-school English teacher would not fault me for this one, I'm quite sure!

gaddafi thanks Germany, Russia and China

gaddafi today thanked the governments of Germany, Russia and China for opposing a no-fly zone over Libya, promising new oil contracts.

This in addition to zeif mentioning Greece, Italy, China, Russia and India as people who have supported them (see interview below).

We Libyans will not forgive these governments for choosing oil over the blood of Libyans.  I will boycott all products from these countries and God help me, I will do all within my power to make sure these countries do not get a drop of oil when Libya becomes free.

Libya's Transitional Council

I keep reading in the US that we don't know who the opposition in Libya are.  I always thought, just ask!  They are eager to talk and Europe has been proactive in reaching out to them.  Well, here they are:

I'm confused

I don't know how to react to this.  The UK and Portugal are supporting the Libyan people, but Turkey, the only Muslim member of Nato, has strongly opposed the idea of a no-fly zone, warning it could create "dangerous results".

Open Letter to President Obama

Dear Mr. President

4 years ago, I was filled with hope.  When I learned of you, I saw a man of convictions who would do the right thing regardless of political fallout. With hope in hand, I campaigned for you, donated to your campaign, defended you and debated countless people about the benefit of getting you into the White House.  When you were inaugurated, I was filled with pride.

That was 4 years ago.  As a Libyan American who just returned from Libya, I find myself in the position of wishing McCain was our leader.  With regards to Libya, he has proven himself a leader.

Mr. President, I saw with my own eyes the death, torture and heartache that is happening in Libya.  Each day that passes, Gaddafi kills more and more Libyans while you carry on pondering options.  I am not even talking about military options, which while I am not a military expert, I am confused by the talk of complexity, being that Ronald Reagan successfully bombed Gaddafi into submission in 1986.  I am talking of real moral support that requires no risk to American lives or wealth.  Recognize the Transitional National Council, a group of outstanding Libyan citizens that have a stated goal of a free democratic Libya that respects human rights. This is not only good for Libya, but for America too, after all, Gaddafi has on mumereous occasions killed American citizens (Pan Am, Germany, Austria and numerous other instances).  By continuing to ignore the National Council as the legitimate governing organization of Libya (we Libyans recognize it), you are by default continuing to recognize and legitimize Gaddafi, contrary to your statements that he must go.  When your Secretary of State says we must have the UN leading the effort, which we all know will never happen, your government is only encouraging Gaddafi, who is crazy but not ignorant to world inaction.

Mr. President, 4 years ago I was filled with hope.  Today, I plan to go support the people of Libya and with me I carry a message that real support from the U.S. is hopeless.

A man who loves America and Libya as you would love a father and mother,
Tareq
